Willie Mae Skerik

Willie Mae Skerik, age 88, of Abbott, passed away Thursday afternoon, June 23, 2016 at Town Hall Estates in Hillsboro. A rosary will be recited 6:00 p.m. Sunday at Aderhold Funeral Home in West, with visitation to follow until 8:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 3:00 p.m. Monday, June 27, 2016 at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption, with Rev. Paul Hudson as celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. Willie Mae was born January 5, 1928 in Penelope, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Krolik) Marek. She graduated from Penelope High School in 1946. After graduating, Willie Mae went to work for the Horn Mop Factory in West. On December 26, 1949, Willie Mae was united in marriage to Frank A. Skerik in Abbott. He preceded her in death on December 21, 1999. She grew up on the farm and had always wanted to become a nurse. When West Community Hospital opened, she decided to begin her training as a nurse. Willie Mae worked as a nurse for over 20 years until her retirement. Willie Mae was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in West, and KJZT Society No.104 in Abbott. She loved flowers, and more recently would spend her days coloring pictures of flowers and birds. Willie Mae also enjoyed working on the farm, gardening, sewing, cooking and canning. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Willie Mae was also preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Albina Howard, Leona Kolar, Mary Marek and Lillie Marek; her brothers, Frank Willie Marek and wife Willie Mae, and Joe Marek; and brother-in-law, Albin Kallus. Survivors include her son, Ronnie L. Skerik of Abbott; her daughter, Dolores Brezina and husband Jerry of Fort Worth; grandchildren, Jason Brezina and wife Olga, and Jennifer Ficula and husband Rob; great grandchildren, Landen and Lillian Ficula; her sister, Josephine Kallus; her brothers, Leon Marek and wife Kathy, and Eugene Marek and wife Betty; brothers-in-law, Alfons Kolar and Rufus Howard; sister-in-law, Annie Mae Marek; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives. Pallbearers are Jason Brezina, Robert Ficula, David Kallus, Kenneth Kolar, Gregory Marek and David Girard. Memorials may be made to West Rest Haven Disaster Relief Fund or Town Hall Estates in Hillsboro.
