Vivian Elva (Hassell) Wines, age 92, of Irene, passed away early Saturday morning, June 6, 2015 at Scott & White Hospital in Temple. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 8, 2015 at the First Baptist Church of Mertens, with Rev. Ken James and Rev. Clint Crawford officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery near Hubbard. The family will receive visitors from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday at Aderhold Funeral Home in West. Vivian was born April 5, 1923 near Maydell, the daughter of Verner Ray and Marie (Johansen) Hassell. She graduated from Mt. Calm High School in 1940. On August 22, 1943, she was united in marriage to Melvin Wayne Wines in Corpus Christi. Wayne preceded her in death on August 28, 1988. Vivian was Post Master for the Irene Post Office for 20 years before her retirement in 1998. She also worked at Grant Buie Hospital in Hillsboro and as a bookkeeper for the Brandon/Irene Water Supply. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Mertens and a former member of the Irene Baptist Church. Vivian enjoyed sewing, embroidering, quilting, gardening, and playing dominoes. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren. Vivian is also preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Christine Hull, Geraldine Neal, Venita McCarley, Betty Jo Nolentubby and Shirley Fry. Survivors include a daughter, Freda Toon and husband Harvey of Houston; two sons, Gary Wines and wife Ida of Leroy and Kirk Wines and wife Pauline of West; a brother, Owen Ray Hassell; grandchildren, Steven Toon and wife Cheryl, Kimberly Ross and husband Don, Richard Wines and wife Jennifer, David Wines and wife Anna, Angela Everhart and husband Jordan, Bradley Wines and wife Sarah and Pamela Hilpert and husband Bryan; great grandchildren, Allison, Kaylee, Corey, Blake, Lexy, Leah, Shelby, Luke, Emily, Mitchell, Rylin, Miles, Brayden, Brianna, Ruby and one on the way; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Pallbearers are Steven Toon, Richard Wines, David Wines, Bradley Wines, Jordan Everhart, Don Ross and Bryan Hilpert. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist of Mertens.
