Sidney M. Kalina, age 84, of Elm Mott, passed away late Thursday afternoon, July 27, 2017 at West Rest Haven in West. A rosary will be recited 4:00 p.m. Sunday at the Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel in West by Msgr. Isidore Rozycki, followed by visitation until 6:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 31, 2017 at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Tours, with Rev. Walter Dhanwar as celebrant. Military Graveside Rites will follow at St. Martin's Cemetery, conducted by West Veterans Honor Guard. Sidney was born November 22, 1932 in Praha, the son of Mat and Mary (Kubenka) Kalina. He was a 1950 graduate of St. Joseph's High School in Rowena, Texas and later attended 4-C Business College. Sidney served his country with the United States Air Force during the Korean War from 1951 to 1955 as a cryptographer. On September 19, 1955 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Gleich in Rowena. They moved to Central Texas to raise their family while he worked for General Tire and Rubber Company for over 32 years before retiring in 1985. He was a member of St. Martin's Catholic Church in Tours. Sidney was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4819, RVOS Lodge, KJT Society and Catholic Life Association. He was a fast pitch softball pitcher for the HEB and Air Force Leagues and coached Little League Baseball for Tours. Sidney enjoyed fishing, camping, gambling and a good pivo. He was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers and the West Trojans. Sidney was preceded in death by his parents; great-grandson, Levi Hurt; brothers, Harry and Benedict Kalina; and brother-in-law, Victor Hoelscher Survivors include his beloved wife of 61 years, Elizabeth Kalina of Elm Mott; children, Gregory Kalina and wife Dianna, Steve Kalina and wife Cindy, Theresa Dudik and husband Eugene, Duane Kalina and wife Robin, Thomas Kalina and fianc Selena Stewart, Christopher Kalina and wife Denise and Jeanette Browder and husband Brian; brother, Marcel Kalina; sisters, Alice Gleich, Germaine Hoelscher and Valeria Hoelscher; 19 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren and 3 on the way; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Active pallbearers are Bill Bettge, Aaron Kalina, Shawn Kalina, Allen Dudik, Joeseph Kalina and Justin Kalina. Honorary pallbearers are Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren and God Children. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Martin's C.C.E., St. Martin's Steeple Fund or American Cancer Society. The family would like to give special recognition and deep appreciation to Dr. Timothy Schiller, Dr. Donald A. Stewart, Dr. Carl Chakmakjian, Dr. Jeremy Seely and especially the staff at West Rest Haven.
