Shirley Slovak Johnson

October 27, 1939 — July 3, 2010

Shirley (Slovak) Guillory Johnson, age 70, of Waco, passed away early Saturday afternoon, July 3, 2010 at Ridgecrest Retirement Care in Waco. Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Viking Drive in Waco, with Bishop Frank Partin officiating. Graveside service will be held 3:00 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Cemetery in West. A rosary will be recited 6:00 p.m. Tuesday at Aderhold Funeral Home by Gladys Jares and Janice Kaluza, with visitation to follow until 8:00 p.m. Mrs. Johnson was born October 27, 1939 in Donna, the daughter of Anton A. and Justina (Halencak) Slovak. She attended schools in Abbott and graduated from Abbott High School in 1957. Shirley worked as a cashier for H.E.B., in accounting for Waco Communications, for T-Shirts Plus International, and Waco Savings & Loan, all in Waco. She also worked as a teacher's aide for the Bosque County Coop in Meridian. Shirley was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she was also a member of the Relief Society. She was a former Girl Scout Leader and a librarian for the Family History Library where she was a genealogist. Shirley was a very patriotic person who loved her country. She enjoyed caring for her family; watching old movies with Heather; singing to her grandchildren; caring for the flowers and trees in her yard, especially her daffodils; and was known as an artist who loved music and poetry. She is preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Johnny R. Slovak, Jerry Slovak and an infant, Jimmy Slovak; and two infant sisters, Dorothy Slovak and Patricia Slovak. Survivors include three daughters, Angela Loftin of Waco, Teresa Lyons and husband Tim of Richardson and Robin Watkins of Waco; five brothers, Frank Vanek of Vernon, Robert "Bob" Slovak and wife Judy of Corpus Christi, Ernest Slovak and wife Ann and David Slovak and wife Janell, all of Elm Mott, and Daniel Slovak and wife Theresa of West; two sisters, Ruth Gerik of West and Gladys Jares and husband Melvin of Elm Mott; six grandchildren, Michelle Hanzlicek and Rudy Bravo, Heather Hanzlicek, Holly Lyons, Emily Lyons, Anastasia Vana and husband Billy and Nicole Joyner and fiance Mark Kuban; three great grandchildren, Jacob, Jonathn and Destiny; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Active pallbearers are Tim Lyons, Rudy Bravo Jr., Billy Vana, Anthony Jares, Richard Polansky, Duane Kalina and Jacob Bravo. Honorary pallbearer will be Mark Kuban. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Friends For Life or the Humanitarian Fund.
