Roy Aubrey Burton

Roy Aubrey Burton, age 87, of Gholson, passed away late Sunday morning, June 3, 2012 at the Central Texas Veterans Hospital in Waco. Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at Aderhold Funeral Home in West. Burial will follow at Gholson Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Mr. Burton was born October 29, 1924 in Aquilla, the son of Marion and Roxie (Gregory) Burton. He attended Gholson schools and received an engineering degree from the University of Oklahoma. Roy served his country with the United States Marines as a platoon sergeant during World War II serving in the Pacific area. On April 6, 1943 he was united in marriage to Margaret McCartney in Waco. She preceded him in death on March 6, 2003. Roy worked as a maintenance manager for the Waco Post Office Sectional Center for 21 years until his retirement in 1983. He was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Gholson. He was also a member of the Karem Shrine Temple and Waco Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed playing poker, slot machines, and going to the horse races. He also loved entertaining residents at several rest homes in the Waco area with the Shriners. Roy is also preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Billy Burton and Virgil Burton; and a sister, Velma Bullock. Survivors include a son, Kenneth R. Burton and wife Ann of Saginaw; a daughter, Audrey Murray and husband Patrick of Mesquite, his companion and supporter, Sue Headley of Axtell; two brothers, Ewell Burton of Willis Point and Marion Burton and wife Margie of Waxahachie; a sister, Betty Campbell, of Waxahachie; two sisters-in-law, Rae Burton of Italy and Lucille McCartney of West; 4 grandchildren, Kenneth R. Burton Jr., Marie DeLackner and husband Bart, Natalie VanZuden and husband Derek, and Harold Sexton, Jr. and wife Julie; several great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Pallbearers are members of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a local veteran charity of your choice.
