Richard J. "Dick" Vavra, age 89, of Ross, passed away early Thursday afternoon, November 13, 2014 at the Clifton Nursing & Rehab Center in Clifton. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 17, 2014 at the Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel in West, with Minister Sam Armstrong officiating. Burial will follow at White Rock Cemetery near Ross. The family will receive visitors from 1:00 p.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home. Richard was born July 28, 1925 in Ross, the son of Peter W. and Leach (Deggs) Vavra. He attended the Ross school and was a 1943 graduate of West High School. He served his country with the United States Navy during World War II. Richard was a draftsman at the Alamo Steel Company for over 10 years before retiring in 1985. He was a faithful member of the Elm Mott Church of Christ, where he led the singing. Richard was a life member of the American Legion Post #478, served on the Ross City Council and was a volunteer firefighter of the Ross Fire Department for over 30 years. He enjoyed photography, looking at antique cars and listening to music. He especially loved spending time with his family and friends. Dick is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Arnold, Alfred, Herbert and Robert; and a sister, Arlene. Survivors include a brother, Harold "Hal" Vavra and his wife Dorothy of Temple; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Elm Mott Church of Christ, West Rest Haven Disaster Relief Fund or Clifton Nursing & Rehab Center.
