Opal Avanell King, age 87, of Waco, passed away Sunday afternoon, April 7, 2013 at Providence Health Center in Waco. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel in West, with Rev. Terry McElrath officiating. Burial will follow at Closner Cemetery near West. The family will receive visitors from 10:00 a.m. Thursday, until service time at the funeral home. Mrs. King was born September 21, 1925 in McGirk, Texas the daughter of Jervy Jersey and Mahalia Elizabeth (Havens) Newton. She attended schools in Starr. On December 10, 1951 she was united in marriage to Alton King in Clovis, New Mexico. Alton preceded her in death on May 12, 1995. Avanell worked for several schools including Thunderbird Elementary in Plainview. She was an Avon representative for many years. She was a member of West Church of Christ and Northcrest Church of Christ. Opal enjoyed cooking, doing crafts and especially loved spending time with her family. Avanell is also preceded in death by her parents; seven brothers, Rispy Newton, Cares Newton, Dealin Newton, Omri Newton, Jethro Newton, Herschel Newton, and Chester Newton; and four sisters, Patsy Denno, Ina Cunningham, Una Caraway and Ladine Hooper. Survivors include her daughter, Sheila Lenart of Waco; three grandchildren, Renee Ebeling, Lorie Vernon and Sara Lenart; four great grandchildren, Hayden, Anna, Emylee and David; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Pallbearers are Mike Lenart, Keith Vernon, John Lenart, James Lenart, Bernie Lenart and Lindsey Hooper. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Providence Hospice.
