Mary Elizabeth McCartney, age 90, of Gholson, passed away late Sunday morning, July 10, 2005 at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center in Waco. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Gholson, with Rev. Ann Hitt officiating. Burial will follow at Gholson Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Mrs. McCartney was born June 13, 1915 in Navasota, the daughter of Lorenzo and Allie May (Parker) Burmingham. She attended schools in Navasota. She married Raymond Nathaniel McCartney on September 2, 1930. He preceded her in death on October 18, 1965. She and her husband farmed in the Gholson area for most of their married life. Mary enjoyed fishing, cooking, playing poker, and dancing. She was a wonderful grandmother to her grandchildren and will be truly missed. She was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church where she formerly taught Sunday school. Her parents; two sons, Donald Ray "Donnie" McCartney and George Curtis "Curty" McCartney; and a daughter, Brenda Mae Glenn Patterson also preceded her in death. Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Sybil McCartney of Gholson; seven grandchildren, Liz Rich and husband Jimmy, Allen McCartney and wife Stacey, Terri Kilgo and husband Billy, Delton Glenn and wife Tawnya, Don McCartney and wife Lynn, Joyce Embry, and Barbara Gilstrap; 16 great grandchildren; 9 great great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Pallbearers are Allen McCartney, Jimmy Rich, Delton Glenn, Billy Kilgo, Gene Dorris, and Don McCartney. Memorials may be made to the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Gholson.
