Mary Jo Marek

Mary Jo Marek, age 79, of West, passed away late Friday night, April 23, 2010 at St. Catherine Center in Waco. Graveside services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday at Gerald Cemetery near Leroy, with Rev. Joel Boesche officiating. The family will receive visitors from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Mary Jo was born on June 18, 1930 in West, the daughter of Adolph Peter and Frances (Cvikel) Matus, Sr. She attended schools in Elm Mott. On October 25, 1947 she was united in marriage to George A. Marek in Tours. He preceded her in death on October 7, 1999. Mary Jo was a hair dresser and owned and operated Mary's Beauty Shop in West and Mart for over 40 years until her retirement in 1997. She enjoyed yard work, visiting with people, and especially loved spending time with her granddaughter. Mary Jo was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Bellmead and the S.P.J.S.T. Lodge #54 in West. Her parents and three sisters, Frances Wills, Hattie Griffin, and Louise Johnson also preceded her in death. Survivors include a daughter, Joyce Locke and husband Louis, Jr. of West; a son, Stephen "Stevie" Marek and wife Carolyn of West; a brother, A. P. Matus, Jr. and wife Lil of West; two sisters, Elizabeth Hejl of Ross and Betty Pareya of West; a granddaughter, Amanda Marek of West; very special friends Jayne Good of Mart and Michael Heath Perry of West; her cat, Kida; and many nieces nephews, other relatives and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, West Rest Haven Memorial Fund, or the charity of your choice.
