Marvin Nors

December 21, 1941 — January 1, 2024

Marvin Richard Nors, age 82, of Hewitt, passed away peacefully on the evening of January 1, 2024 in Hewitt.

A rosary will be recited 10:00 a.m. Friday January 12, 2024 at Aderhold Funeral Home in West by Marcella Sinkule and memorial service to follow, with Deacon Robin Waters officiating. Military Graveside Rites will follow at Fatima Cemetery near Abbott, conducted by West Veterans Honor Guard.

Marvin was born on December 21, 1941 in Abbott, Texas, the second son of Jim and Clara (Hykel) Nors. He grew up and attended school in Abbott and graduated from Abbott High School in 1960, where he was Class President and played on the basketball, baseball and track teams, as well as being the F.F.A. President and F.H.A. Sweetheart. He was quite a popular guy and was known as "Sonny Boy". Marvin served in the United States Navy from 1960 to 1964 aboard the guided missile destroyer, USS Henry B. Wilson, operating as a unit of the Seventh Fleet in the Western Pacific. He was a plank owner of the newly commissioned ship. When he returned from the Navy he operated his own business, Marvin R. Nors Wholesale Co. (Nors Candy and Tobacco Company), for several years. He sold that business and went to work for Lone Star Beer Distributors until 1985. Marvin made a lot of friends along his candy route and even more along his beer route. After that, Marvin worked as a salesman for Bird Kultgen, Inc., a local Ford dealership from 1985 until 2010. He retired from there after 25 years of service.

Marvin enjoyed bowling and was a member of a bowling league in his younger days, and also sponsored his bowling team under Nors Candy and Tobacco Company. He enjoyed playing with their dogs, Gretta, Maisie, Cassie and Reno, although sadly, they all crossed the rainbow bridge. Marvin loved playing the Texas lottery and betting on football pots. He liked having football parties at home and really enjoyed talking about the money he won. He had his favorite place to get his scratch off tickets and hamburgers. He and his wife, Joan, enjoyed traveling in their RV and going on cruises with Marvin’s Navy buddies from the Henry B. Wilson. Marvin was a member of the VFW Post #4819 and American Legion Post #478 in West. Marvin and Joan celebrated 52 years of marriage on September 24, 2023, and Marvin had just turned 82 years old on December 21st.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Clara (Hykel) Nors; his brother, Robert Nors; his brother-in-law, James Sinkule; his mother and father-in-law, Isidor and Josephine Berger; and his former wife Ruth (Lehman) Nors.

Survivors include his loving wife, Joan (Berger) Nors; daughter and son-in-law, Cristi Anne and Rick Figueroa; granddaughter, Taylor Figueroa; step-daughter and husband, Carla and Terry Hulsey; and their sons, Terry Hulsey and wife Lauren and children Elena and Emmitt, and Seth Hulsey and Mike Horton. Marvin is also survived by his sisters, Marcella Sinkule, Dolores "Dee" Willenborg and husband Jerry and Clara Mae Roznovsky; a sister-in-law Marie (Neckar) Nors; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Royce and Andrea Walston; and many nieces and nephews.
