Martha Gilchrist Adams, age 90, of West, passed away early Friday morning, November 26, 2010 at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center in Waco. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday at the Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel in West, with Dr. John Crowder officiating. Burial will follow at Bold Springs Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Mrs. Adams was born May 30, 1920 in Ross, the daughter of David and Nettie (Herbelin) McMahan. She attended schools in Abbott and graduated from West High School in 1936. On June 2, 1938 she was united in marriage to William L. "Bill" Gilchrist in Fairbanks. He preceded her in death on June 10, 1995. Martha was then united in marriage to Johnny S. Adams on January 17, 1997 in West. He preceded her in death on August 6, 2007. Martha was a mother, homemaker and worked in the junior high school cafeteria for the Cy-Fair I.S.D. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of West and of the Order of the Eastern Star Lodge in Waco. Martha enjoyed sewing, knitting, fishing, and camping. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren. Her parents; five brothers, Hollis McMahan, Robert McMahan, Artie McMahan, Burl McMahan and Murl McMahan; and five sisters, Vera Spruce, Annie Ramsey, Arlecy Davis, Velma Elrod and Laura McMahan, also preceded her in death. Survivors include three sons, James L. Gilchrist and wife Karen of Waco, William F. Gilchrist and wife Arlene of Sealy, and David N. Gilchrist of Houston; two daughters, Mary J. Summers and husband A.B. of West, and Doris J. Maywald and husband Archie of Tomball; fifteen grandchildren, Paula Payne and husband Larry, Teresa Baranowski and husband Tim, Butch Maywald and wife Alisa, Jim Gilchrist and wife Janet, Ronda Tindell and husband Jody, Timmy Maywald and wife Liz, Martha Gilchrist and husband John Roundtree, Paul Gilchrist, Julie Grubbs and husband Larin, Tanya Willingham and husband Nealand, Preston Gilchrist and wife Lauren, Lori Gilchrist and husband Jesus, Billy Gilchrist and wife Anita, Holly Gilchrist and Colin Gilchrist; thirty-nine great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Pallbearers are Jim Gilchrist, Preston Gilchrist, Billy Gilchrist, Colin Gilchrist, Paul Gilchrist, Butch Maywald and Timmy Maywald. Honorary pallbearers are Paula Payne, Teresa Baranowski, Ronda Tindell, Martha Gilchrist, Julie Grubbs, Tanya Willingham, Lori Gilchrist and Holly Gilchrist. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of West Building Fund, West Senior Center, or the charity of your choice.
