Lionel McHargue, age 81, of Leroy, passed away Friday afternoon, December 6, 2013 at Hillcrest Medical Center in Waco from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel in West, with Dr. Rex Bland and Rev. Jeromy Connell officiating. Burial will follow at Mesquite Cemetery near Mt. Calm. The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Lionel was born December 13, 1931 in Birome, the son of Lenard and Ada (Early) McHargue. He attended Birome and Axtell schools. He served with the United States Army during the Korean War. On September 19, 1953, he was united in marriage to the love of his life Vera Jo Leathers in Waco. He was a farmer and rancher and did custom farming with his sons. Lionel also worked for Owens-Illinois Glass Plant in Waco for 41 years until his retirement in 1994. He enjoyed his cattle and horses and at one time bought and sold horses with his son. Lionel especially loved family gathering and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a man of his word and a very good husband, father and PaPa. His family will attest to the fact he never met a stranger and was good to anyone who met him. He was a Baptist and a Mason. Lionel is preceded in death by his parents; a son, Clint McHargue; a brother and sister-in-law, Doug and Thelma McHargue; and brothers-in-law, Jack Hand and Harry Snell. Survivors include his beloved wife of 60 years, Vera Jo McHargue of Leroy; four sons, Jerry McHargue and wife Terry of Axtell, Timothy McHargue and Bradley McHargue and wife Holly, all of Leroy and Teddy Clinard and wife Elizabeth of China Spring; two daughters, Reyna Hand and husband Barry and Stephanie Klanika and husband Norman, all of Leroy; and many beloved grandchildren; great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Active pallbearers are Justin Hand, Jaime Hand, Kyle Klanika, Justin Klanika, Wesley McHargue, Clint McHargue, Colby McHargue, Chad McHargue, Tyler Connally and Brent Petty. Honorary pallbearers are his grandchildren and great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to the Mesquite Cemetery.
