Leon H. Sonnenberg

Leon H. Sonnenberg, age 70, of West, passed away early Wednesday afternoon, September 16, 2015 at Hillcrest Medical Center in Waco. Funeral services will be held 9:00 a.m. Monday, September 21, 2015 at the Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel in West, with Minister Mark Huffhines officiating. Burial will follow at Gerald Cemetery near Leroy. The family will receive visitors from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Leon was born March 26, 1945 in Waco, the son of Herman H. and Hertha (Piel) Sonnenberg. He attended schools in Bynum and Malone. On December 21, 1968 he was united in marriage to Estelle Casey in Leroy. Estelle preceded him in death on May 13, 1997. Leon worked as a machine operator for Cargill Processing Plant in Waco for 16 years, before retiring in 2005. He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Malone. Leon enjoyed fishing, bar-b-queing and listening to Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson songs. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Leon is also preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Deanna Couch. Survivors include children, Hope Porter of Red Oak, Lori Holmes and husband Warren of Pflugerville, Sherry Heintz of Valley Mills, Tammie Holder and husband Selby of West, Larry Sonnenberg and wife Lisa of China Spring and Michael "Pooper" Sonnenberg and wife Karen of West; grandchildren, Lorenzo Porter, Hunter Porter, Brendyn Porter, Zachary Holmes, Jackson Holmes, Emma Holmes, Andi Heintz, Casey Heintz, Elizabeth Heintz, Dakota Holder, Brian Buchanan, Nikki Jacobs, Courtney Sonnenberg, Colton Sonnenberg, Brad Kroll and Dee Dee Kroll; 5 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Active pallbearers are Albert Hornak Jr., Roger Brown, Brad Kroll, Lorenzo Porter, Brian Buchanan, Pat Stewart, Emmanuel Mitchell and Troy Graves. Honorary pallbearers are grandsons, Brendyn Porter, Zachary Holmes, Jackson Holmes, Dakota Holder and Colton Sonnenberg. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the West Volunteer Ambulance Association or to West Volunteer Fire Department.
