Katie S. (Soukup) Kaska, age 93, of Abbott, passed away early Saturday morning, August 24, 2013, at St. Catherine's Center in Waco. A rosary will be held 6:00 p.m. Sunday at the Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel in West with visitation to follow until 8:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Monday at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Abbott, with Rev. Stephen Nesrsta and Rev. Ouseph Thekkumthala as celebrants, assisted by Deacon Denver Crawley. Burial will follow at Fatima Cemetery. Katie was born February 21, 1920, in West, the daughter of Mary (Kracmer) and Joe F. Soukup, Sr. She attended Alligator Creek School. On October 24, 1939, she was united in marriage to Steve N. Kaska in West. Steve preceded her in death on August 4, 2006. Katie was a homemaker and seamstress, working at Lorch Manufacturing in West and Malouf's Manufacturing in Hillsboro for over 20 year before retiring in 1982. She then worked for 7 years at the Turkey Shop in Abbott. Katie was a charter member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Abbott, where she served as bazaar chairman for many years. She was also a member of the K.J.Z.T. St. Ludmilla Society #104 and was named Abbott Citizen of the year in 1988. Katie enjoyed baking kolaches, her recipe was used at Kaska's Bakery. She also enjoyed quilting, sewing, gardening, planning weddings and volunteering at West Rest Haven for many years. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Katie is also preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter, Janette Marie Kaska; brothers, Louis Soukup, George Soukup, Johnnie Soukup and Joe Soukup. Survivors include two sons, Ron Kaska and wife Rose Ann of Abbott and Steve "Buddy" Kaska Jr. and wife Judy of Waco; two daughters, Joan Thoede and husband Don of Clifton and Nancy Sustala and husband Bill of Abbott; brothers, Al Soukup and wife Georgie, and Steve Soukup and wife Frances; sisters, Hattie Kaska, Rosie Knapek, Mary Neckar, and Lillie Matus and husband Raymond; sister-in-law, Evelyn Soukup; grandchildren, Ryan Kaska and wife Aprille, Ronda Ballew, Karen Thoede, Phil Sustala and wife Kim, Roger Kaska and wife Julie, and Amanda Ziegler and husband Chris; great grandchildren, Kyndall and Michael Kaska, Ashley and Morgan Ballew, Karli Kempson, Taylor Smith, Riley and Seth Sustala, and Dylan and Katherine Ziegler; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Pallbearers are Ryan Kaska, Aprille Kaska, Ronda Ballew, Karen Thoede, Phil Sustala, Kim Sustala, Roger Kaska, Julie Kaska, Amanda Ziegler and Chris Ziegler. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to West Rest Haven Relief Fund or West Volunteer Ambulance Association.
