Joyce Ann Norris

Joyce Ann Norris, age 80, of West, formerly of San Antonio, passed away late Sunday afternoon, March 17, 2013 at West Rest Haven in West. Memorial services will be held at a later date in San Antonio. Mrs. Norris was born August 21, 1932 in Taylor, the daughter of Neal L. and Mary Lee (Vidler) Norris. She was a 1949 graduate of Burbank High School in San Antonio prior to receiving her Registered Nursing Degree from Scott and White Nursing School in Temple. She received a bachelor's degree in Science from Houston College and a master's degree at Teacher's College in New York. Joyce worked in the Veterans Administration Hospital's in Texas, New Jersey, New York, and Arkansas before retiring as Chief Nurse from the VA in Nashville, TN in 1989. She was very active in the civil rights movement in the late 1960's and early 1970's and was a member of the National Association of retired Veterans. She served her country with the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. She enjoyed all sports and excelled in tennis, softball, basketball, bowling, golf and running marathons. Joyce is preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Neal L. Norris Jr. Survivors include three sisters, Patsy Jean Helms and husband Drue of Helotes, Bettye Holzmann of Ross and Barbara Arnold of San Antonio; a Godchild, Karen Joyce Emery; many nieces and nephews, including Donald Holzmann; and several other relatives and friends.
