Jose Raul Brenes-Paz, age 61, of Holland, passed away Monday, January 9, 2006 in Temple. A rosary will be recited at 10:00 a.m. Thursday at the Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel in West, by Rev. Ed Karasek. Funeral services will be held at 10:15 Thursday at the Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ed Karasek officiating. Military Graveside Rites will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery near West conducted by V.F.W. Post 4819. The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Jose was born on August 18, 1944 in Nicaragua, the son of Ignacio and Angelina (Paz) Brenes. He attended schools in Nicarague and as a young teen he was a radio announcer and a volunteer for the Red Cross. On August 20, 1972, he was united in marriage to Olivia Marquez in Puerto Rico. They then came to the United States where he entered the United States Army in 1975 and was discharged at the rank of Staff Sergeant in 1986. Jose worked as carpenter and cabinetmaker for several years before going to work for McLane's in Temple, where he served as a crewleader for seven years before retiring in 1994. He enjoyed playing and watching baseball, hunting, and woodworking. In his younger teens, he was a radio announcer and also served the Red Cross as a volunteer. Survivors include his wife Olivia Brenes of Holland; his son, Jose Alonso Brenes of Holland; two daughters, Rosa Maria Kostecka and husband Mark of West and Alcira Brenes; his sister, Rosa Maria Brenes; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Pallbearers will be Mark Kostecka, Michael Kostecka, James Kostecka, David Chudej, and Jose Alonso Brenes.
