Joe Lester "J. L." Middleton, age 66, of West, passed away Tuesday evening, January 3, 2017 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Axtell. A rosary will be recited 6:00 p.m. Thursday at the Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel in West, followed by visitation until 8:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial celebrated 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 6, 2017 at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Tours, with Msgr. Isidore Rozycki and Rev. Walter Dhanwar as celebrants. Burial will follow at St. Martin's Cemetery. Joe was born March 3, 1950 in Waco, the son of Agnes (Deiterman) and the late Truman L. Middleton. He attended the old Tours School and was a 1968 graduate of West High School. Joe was a maintenance supervisor for the Waco Independent School District for 32 years before retiring in 2002. He was a member of St. Martin's Catholic Church in Tours. He was a ranch venture tour guide for the Boy Scouts in several areas of the state. Joe enjoyed hunting, playing dominoes, riding horses, being outdoors and telling a good story. He especially loved spending time with his granddaughter, Maecy. Survivors include his daughter, Wendy Schmidt and husband Bubba of Aquilla; his granddaughter, Maecy; his mother, Agnes "Sis" Middleton; his brother, Lyn Middleton and wife Dorothy; his sisters, Beverly Uptmor and husband Billy and Joyce Marek and husband Gregory; the mother of his daughter, Cindy Middleton; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Active pallbearers are Brian Uptmor, Troy Willenborg, Mike Hutyra, Rick Mynar, Greg Marek and Junior Rieger. Honorary pallbearers are his domino playing friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Martin's Cemetery or St. Martin's C.C.E. Program.
