Jimmie Eugene Smith, age 65, of West, passed away Monday evening, September 29, 2014 at Baylor Scott & White Hospital in Waco. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 3, 2014 at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel in West, with Dr. John Crowder officiating. Military Graveside Rites will follow at Gerald Cemetery near Leroy, conducted by West Veterans Honor Guard . The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Jimmie was born February 8, 1949 in Waco, the son of James W. and Marie (Casey) Smith. He attended schools in Crowley. On June 4, 1966 he was united in marriage to Lenna "Jeannie" Sirmons in Crowley. Jimmie served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, receiving the purple heart. He graduated from the police academy at McLennan Community College and worked as a sergeant for the Rockdale Police Force. He also worked for the Marlin and Eagle Lake Police Force and was a long haul truck driver until his retirement in 1988. Jimmie enjoyed restoring classic cars, riding his Harley, fishing, collecting arrowheads, and spending time with his family. He loved to drag race and was the first person to race for the U.S. Army. Jimmie is preceded in death by his mother; brothers, Johnny Smith and Richard Smith; his sister, Anita Pack; and grandsons, Cannyon Davis and Ryan Weckar, Jr. Survivors include his beloved wife of 48 years, Jeannie Smith of West; a daughter, Tammie Jares and husband Robert of West; two sons, Donald Smith and wife Amy of Gatesville and Jessie Smith of West; his father, James Smith of McGregor; a sister, Alice Moore and husband Mike; a sister-in-law, Rebecca Smith; 3 very close nieces, Tonya Reese, Kendall Reese and Lori Reese; 8 grandchildren, Ethan Smith, Zoei Smith, Bella Smith, Riley Smith, Ryan Weckar, Lance Jares, Chance Jares and Brittany Davis; 5 great-grandchildren, Seth, Gavin, Avery, Kaeden and Xander; and many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Pallbearers are Robert Jares, Ethan Smith, Lance Jares, Ryan Weckar, James Pack, Tommy Kilmer, Louis Sirmons and Charles Camp. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the West Veterans Honor Guard.
