Jessie Ruth Davis

Jessie Ruth Davis, age 95, of Whitney, formerly of Aquilla, passed away late Saturday morning, May 21, 2011 at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center in Waco. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church of Aquilla, with Bro. Ken Steffen officiating. Burial will follow at Prairie Grove Cemetery near Aquilla. The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Aderhold Funeral Home in West. Mrs. Davis was born April 19, 1916 in Winnsboro, the daughter of Henry O. and Pearl Lee (King) Snodgrass. She graduated from Winnsboro High School prior to receiving her Bachelor of Education from East Texas Teachers College and her Masters of Education from the University of Houston. On June 27, 1947 she was united in marriage to Jack Olin Davis in Winnsboro. He preceded her in death on June 4, 1994. Ruth taught at several schools, including Pasadena Elementary School and, for many years, at Aquilla Elementary School until her retirement. She was a longtime active and faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Aquilla and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8571 Ladies Auxiliary in Whitney. N May 14, 2011 Ruth won 2nd runner-up at the Miss Senior Heart of Texas Pageant. She loved keeping up with the stock market. Ruth is also preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Weldon Snodgrass; and three sisters, Doris Butler, Precia Harris and Merle Mahaffey. Survivors include a brother, Blanton Snodgrass and wife Margaret of Houston; a sister, Virginia Sprankle, of Layton, Utah; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Active pallbearers are Bob Reber, Brooke Reber, Sylvia Reber, Mary Lee Jones, Ken Steffen, Mike Simmons and Ken Caviness. Honorary pallbearers are Members of the Whitney V.F.W. Post No. 8571 Ladies Auxiliary. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Aquilla.
