Jean Mattson, age 81, of Aquilla, passed away Thursday evening, June 11, 2020 at Baylor Scott White Hillcrest Medical Center in Waco. Funeral Service will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 15, 2020 at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel in West, with Rev. Chris Silva officiating. Burial will follow at Gholson Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 9:00 a.m. Monday until service time at the funeral home. Jean was born July 25, 1938 in Red Wing, Minnesota the daughter of Millard and Marjorie (Shanks) Carlsen. She was a 1956 graduate of Maiden Rock High School in Maiden Rock, Wisconsin, prior to attending Moody Bible College in Chicago. On October 21, 1961 she was united in marriage to Harry Mattson in Lund, Wisconsin. Harry preceded her in death on September 30, 2019. Jean was a member of the New Life Fellowship in Gholson. In 1988 she received her Licensed Practical Nursing Certificate from McLennan Community College in Waco and worked at several area hospitals and nursing homes, including West Rest Haven in West until retiring in 2004. Jean enjoyed playing the piano, cooking, playing Scrabble, sewing, writing poetry, and hosting meals for family and friends. She authored two books "Come Along With Me On A Journey" and "Poems From The Garden Of My Heart". Jean was known as a volunteer representative of Voice of the Martyrs, had a love for the persecuted church around the world and hosted many annual women's retreats. They gave many Bibles to believers near and far. Jean is also preceded in death by her parents; brothers-in-law, Melvin Mattson and Norman Holt; and sister-in-law, Betty Mattson. Survivors include her children, Darlene Mattson and husband Joe DeMars of St. Paul, MN, Lynelle Mattson of Aquilla, Norm Mattson and wife Keri of Woodstock, GA, Tony Mattson of Aquilla, and Sarah Battle and husband Brandon of Spring; her grandchildren, Andrew Mattson, Caroline Mattson, Brennan Mattson, Rebecca Battle, and Joshua Battle; her step grandchildren, Jeffrey DeMars and wife Nikkole, Lucas DeMars and wife Nicole, Sarah O'Connor and husband Nathan, Jill Bergstrom and husband Joe; a twin sister, Jane Ault and husband John; a brother, Marty Carlsen and wife Jane; sisters-in-law, Flora Holt and Elsie Mattson; brother-in-law, Bud Mattson; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Pallbearers are Norm Mattson, Andrew Mattson, Dave Warren, Joe Warren, Nick Warren and Caleb Crawford. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Voice of the Martyrs (www.persecution.com) or Visions Beyond Borders (www.visionbeyondborders.org).
