Hermina M. Marek, age 102 of Abbott, passed away Saturday evening, July 28, 2007 at Lake Shore Village in Waco. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at West Brethren Church with Rev. Curtis Holland officiating. Burial will follow at West Brethren Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Mrs. Marek was born April 21, 1905 near Abbott, the daughter of John and Rosie (Koval) Popp. She attended the Texas School for the Deaf in Austin and on November 17, 1928 she was united in marriage to Jim E. Marek in West. He preceded her in death on November 9, 1970. Hermina was a housewife, homemaker, and helped on the family farm. Hermina enjoyed gardening, canning, making kolaches, spending time with her grandchildren, and being with people. She also enjoyed making quilts and Afghans. She was a lifelong and faithful member of the West Brethren Church, where she was active with the Christian Sisters and the Mutual Aide Society. She was also a member of the S.P.J.S.T. Lodge No. 54 in West. Her parents; her son, Walter Marek; three brothers, Emil Popp, Adolph Popp, and Henry Popp; and two sisters, Rosie Chudej and Mollie Barton, also preceded her in death. Survivors include two daughters, Martha Taylor and husband Kenneth of Bynum and Pauline Ware and husband Doyle of Waco; her daughter-in-law, Evelyn Marek of Abbott; eight grandchildren, Darlene, Dale, Debbie, Brenda, Tammie, Kim, Steven, and Paula; eighteen great grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Pallbearers are Dale Marek, Steven Ware, George Crawshaw, Walt Baranowski, Jamey Orr, Joe Clark, Terry Crawford, and Kenny Scheler. Memorials may be made to West Brethren Church.
