Herbert Vavra, age 80, of Irving, formerly of Ross, passed away late Saturday night, June 6, 2009 at Baylor Medical Center in Irving. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at Aderhold Funeral Home in West, with Minister Sam Armstrong officiating. Burial will follow at White Rock Cemetery in Ross. The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Mr. Vavra was born July 8, 1928 in Dallas, the son of Peter W. and Leach (Deggs) Vavra. He attended schools in West and graduated from West High School in 1946. Herbert served his country with the United States Army during World War II. In 1970 he was united in marriage to Joy Poole in Ross. She preceded him in death on June 4, 2000. He then married Elizabeth Hester in 2006. Herbert was a carpenter and worked in the parts division for General Motors in Arlington for over 30 years before retiring in 1985. He was a faithful member of the Westside Church of Christ in Irving. Herbert enjoyed walking, working jigsaw puzzles, and all sports especially the Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Cowboys. His parents; a brother, Robert Vavra; and a sister, Arlene Vavra also preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Vavra of Irving; four brothers, Arnold Vavra of Toms River, NJ, Alferd Vavra and Richard Vavra both of Ross, and Harold Vavra of Temple; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
