Herbert Detterman

Herbert Detterman, age 99, of West, passed away early Thursday morning, December 24, 2015 at Providence Health Center in Waco. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Paul Hudson officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery near West. The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Herbert was born November 15, 1916 in Menlow, the son Martin and Mary (Miller) Detterman. On January 4, 1941 he was united in marriage to Helen Vestal in Waxahachie. Helen preceded him in death on June 16, 2007. He served his country from 1945 to 1946 during World War II with the United States Army. From 1955 to 1976, Herbert worked for Fedway Department Store in Corpus Christi. Fedway later became Dillard's before he retired in 1978. They then moved to Robinson and opened an embroidery shop and he repaired sewing machines. He was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church in Waco prior to moving to West and becoming a faithful member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West. Herbert enjoyed fishing and going to the West Senior Citizen Center. Herbert is also preceded in death by his parents; brothers, William "Bill" Detterman and Fred Detterman; and sisters, Josie Berger, Estelle Goates, Lou Cox, Frances Schutza and Edith Jares. Survivors include his children, Gloria Detterman of West and Ron Detterman and wife Judy of Lacy Lakeview; 4 grandchildren; 4 great- grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren; sisters, Leona Maler, Della Bartosh and Mildred Perkins; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Active pallbearers are Bruce Armstrong, Aaron Sommerfield, Paul McCollum, Joe Detterman, Clifford Perkins and Josh Perkins. Honorary pallbearers are Melvin Jares, Kenneth Maler and Woody Green. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the West Senior Citizen Center.
