Helen Sustala

Helen Marie Sustala, age 90, of Abbott, passed away early Monday morning, January 8, 2024 at West Rest Haven in West.

A rosary will be recited 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel, followed by visitation until 4:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 15, 2024 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Abbott, with Rev. Stephen Nesrsta as celebrant. Burial will follow at Fatima Cemetery.

Helen was born June 9, 1933 in Hill County, the daughter of Vaclav and Bozena (Ruzicka) Smajstrla. She attended schools in Abbott. On February 6, 1950 she was united in marriage to Raymond Sustala in Abbott. Raymond preceded her in death on January 22, 1999. Helen was a lifelong and faithful member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church where she served as a Eucharistic Minister and led many rosaries. She was also a member of the KJZT Society #104. She was a cashier for Tuft's Turkey Shop in Abbott for many years until retiring in 1999. Helen enjoyed shopping, going out to eat, and cooking. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Helen is also preceded in death by her parents; infant daughters, Jeanette Marie and Elizabeth Josephine Sustala; sisters, Margaret Klaus, Mary Olsovsky, and Martha Neill; and a son-in-law, James J. Kolar.

Survivors include her children, Billy Sustala and wife Nancy of Abbott, David Sustala and wife Betty of Brandon, Karen Kolar of Abbott, Dennis Sustala and wife Mary Jane of Abbott, and Shirley Russell and husband Tim of Abbott; her grandchildren, Phil (Kim) Sustala, Jennifer (Bobby) Reid, Stephanie (Brandon) Tucker, Laura (Blake) Moore, Jeremy (Jennifer) Kolar, Jaimie (Marcus) Gray, Kaylie (Nick) Matula, Candice (Shorty) Janek, Craig (Wendy) Sustala, Shellie (Tyler) Green, Matthew Sustala, Jessica (Hunter) Pope, and Jared Russell; her great grandchildren, Sydney, Kennedy (Tristen), Landry, Mackenzie, Mabry, Weston, Riley, Seth, Avery, Travis, Brylee, Blaire, Denton, Reese, Eleanor, Jace (Victoria), Jocelyn, Tyler, Mason, Jaxon, and Zane; a great great grandson, Kaspian; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Active pallbearers are Phil Sustala, Jennifer Reid, Jeremy Kolar, Craig Sustala, Matthew Sustala, and Jared Russell. Honorary pallbearers are the rest of her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and her great great grandson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church or to the West Volunteer Ambulance Association.
