Helen Schutza, age 90, of West, passed away late Tuesday afternoon, June 13, 2017 at Providence Hospital in Waco. A rosary will be recited and Mass of Christian Burial celebrated 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 16, 2017 at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption, with Rev. Paul Hudson as celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Aderhold Funeral Home. Helen was born April 5, 1927 in Abbott, the daughter of Louis and Christine (Cepak) Hutyra. She attended Abbott schools and was a 1945 graduate of Abbott High School. Shortly after high school she worked at The Pentagon in Washington DC under then president, Harry S. Truman. On October 15, 1946 she was united in marriage to Lawrence A. Schutza in Waco. Lawrence preceded her in death on August 25, 1993. Helen was a secretary for General Tire and Rubber Company in Waco for many years before retiring in 1990. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption. Helen was also a member of the West VFW Post #4819 Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed being a CDA adopted grandmother and volunteering at West Rest Haven. Helen also enjoyed gambling, going to Las Vegas, and playing Poker and football pots. She was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers. Helen is also preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Irene McGee and Carolyn Gerik; and brothers, Ernest Hutyra, George Hutyra and Joe Hutyra. Survivors include many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, many other relatives and friends. Active pallbearers are Hayden Gerik, Keith Gerik, Gary Joe Hutyra, David Pavelka, Shane Anderson, Terry Graves, Jeff Hutyra, Brady Gerik and Brandon Hinojosa. Honorary pallbearers are past and present member of the West VFW Post #4819 Ladies Auxiliary. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the West Volunteer Ambulance Association or to the West Rest Haven Disaster Relief Fund.
