Helen Kubacak

August 17, 1923 — February 13, 2017

A rosary will be recited and Mass of Christian Burial celebrated 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 17, 2017 at St. Marys Catholic Church of the Assumption, with Rev. Paul Hudson as celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Marys Cemetery. Helen was born August 17, 1923 in Hill County, the daughter of Frank and Frances (Mandak) Helona. She attended school in Abbott and was a graduate of Abbott High School prior to receiving her Registered Nursing Degree from the Providence School of Nursing in Waco. On November 8, 1949 she was united in marriage to Raymond J. Kubacak in Abbott. Raymond preceded her in death on December 7, 2009. Helen was the Director of Nursing for West Rest Haven for over 30 years before retiring. She previously worked for Providence Hospital and Dr. Thomas Scanio. Helen was a longtime and faithful member of St. Marys Catholic Church of the Assumption. She was also a member of the KJZT St. Ludmila Society #11, Catholic Life Association, Catholic Daughters of America Court #829, St. Mary's PTC Choir and St. Marys 50-50 Club. Helen enjoyed cooking, staying busy, animals and watching sports, especially the Texas Rangers and Dallas Cowboys. She loved going to Austin to watch her grandsons play sports. Helen was also preceded in death by a son, Richard "Ricky" Kubacak; her parents; brothers, Frank Helona Jr., Stanley Helona and Willie Helona; and sisters, Lillie Makovy, Polly Helona, Bertha Knapek, Adele Metal, Frances Baker, Georgie Kofnovec and Mary Mach. Survivors include a son, Raymond "Smokey" Kubacak, Jr. and wife Cindy of Austin; three grandsons, Ian Kubacak, Isaac Kubacak, and Ivan Kubacak; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Pallbearers are Edward Helona, David Kofnovec, Joe Mach, David Devers, Allan Kubacak and Mike Recek. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to West Rest Haven Disaster Relief Fund.
