Glenda Matthews

Glenda (Starr) Matthews, age 79, of Gholson, passed away early Thursday morning, February 9, 2017 at her daughter's residence. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 16, 2017 at the First Baptist Church in Gholson, with Rev. James Stevens officiating. Graveside services will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Starr Cemetery near Elkhart, TX. The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 Wednesday at Aderhold Funeral Home in West. Glenda was born December 3, 1937 in Malakoff, the daughter of Alonzo and Ava (Pennington) Starr. On April 6, 1967 she was united in marriage to Kirby Matthews in Ft. Worth. She graduated from Jacksonville High School in 1956 and attended 4-C Business College in Waco. Glenda worked in the Financial Aide Department at Texas State Technical College for over 20 years until her retirement in 2006. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Gholson where she served as the organist and pianist for many years. Glenda enjoyed playing the piano, reading love stories, working crossword puzzles and watching "Wheel of Fortune". She especially loved spending time with her family. Glenda is preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Donna Shirey; and a brother, Richard Starr. Survivors include her beloved husband of 49 years, Kirby Matthews of Gholson; her children, Carol Jean Shirey, Marlys Ann Stewart and husband Richard, and Lisa Clay; her stepchildren, Barbara DeChaume and husband Johnny, Andy Matthews and wife June, Rick Matthews and wife Jennie Mae, Lizabeth Wallace, and Sam Matthews and wife Karen; a brother, Robert Starr and wife Alyssa; a sister, Carol Ann Starr; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
