George V. Meurer

George V. Meurer, age 85, of West, passed away early Wednesday morning, October 11, 2017 at his residence. A rosary will be recited 4:00 p.m. Sunday at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West, with visitation to follow until 6:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 16, 2017 at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption, with Rev. Ed Karasek as celebrant. Military Graveside Rites will follow at St. Marys Cemetery, conducted by the West Veterans Honor Guard. George was born February 27, 1932 in Garfield, TX in Travis County, the son of Joe and Marguerite (Siegmund) Meurer. He attended schools in Travis County and was a graduate of St. Edwards High School in Austin. George served his country with the United States Army during the Korean War, stationed in Alaska. On September 17, 1955 he was united in marriage to Henrietta Kracmer. They met by exchanging letters while in the Army. Henrietta preceded him in death on January 10, 2008. George was a faithful member of St Marys Catholic Church of the Assumption in West for over 60 years. He served as a Eucharistic Minister, prayer of Adoration Chapel, and took communion to the homebound and rest home residents. His greatest honor was receiving the Lumen Gentium Award from the Diocese of Austin in June 2017. Additionally, he was a charter member of St. Vincent DePaul Society and a member of RVOS Lodge, American Legion Post #479, ACTS, KJT Society #31, KJZT Society #11, the 50/50 Club, West Fair and Rodeo Association, and a volunteer at West Rest Haven and Meals on Wheels. George and Henrietta served on the board of directors for West Fraternal Auditorium and delivered the Waco Tribune Herald and Dallas Morning News in West for many years. Together, they were awarded the West Citizen of the Year Award in 2000 and were awarded West FFA honorary chapter farmer degrees. George also received the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) award in 2017. He was an air conditioning/refrigeration technician at TSTC for over 25 years before retiring in 1995. After retirement, George enjoyed doing handyman work for people in West and even built a house almost completely on his own. He participated in a community garden at the senior center. George enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and building furniture for his family. His greatest joy was spending time with his children and grandchildren, especially watching them show livestock, participate in sporting events, and participate in school and church programs. George was known for serving others. His children and grandchildren will always treasure and be thankful for the skills he taught them and morals he instilled in them. He was an example of great character to all who knew him. George is also preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law Bobby Clements; brothers, Bill Meurer and Paul Meurer; and a sister, JoAnn Matthews. Survivors include his children, Dennis Meurer and wife Susann of Huntington, WV, Anthony Meurer and wife Debbie of West, Diana Blakley of Lampasas, Thomas Meurer and wife Jaye of West, and Mary Scott and Russell Brackeen of West; brothers, J.C. Meurer and Pat Meurer; a sister, Rosie Schulter; grandchildren, Micaela Meurer, Carlton Apgar, John Apgar, Jerod Meurer and wife Tyler, Dalton Meurer, Jolee Meurer, Tiffany Clements, Tara Schulze and husband Matt, Dylan Meurer, Garrett Meurer, Colton Meurer, Lauren Scott, and Truett Scott; great grandchildren, Brendon, Caiden, Mason, Brighton, and Nora Jane; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Active pallbearers are Jerod Meurer, Dalton Meurer, Dylan Meurer, Garrett Meurer, Colton Meurer, Truett Scott, and Brendon Blackburn. Honorary pallbearers are his granddaughters and great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Clerical Endowment Fund of the Catholic Church, St. Vincent DePaul Society of West, or the charity of your choice.
