George Mikeska

George Mikeska, age 94, of Abbott, passed away early Saturday morning, January 19, 2013 at his home. A rosary will be recited 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Aderhold Funeral Home by his grandchildren and great grandchildren, followed by a visitation until 8:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption, with Rev. Ed Karasek as celebrant. Military Graveside Rites will follow at Fatima Cemetery near Abbott, conducted by West Veterans Honor Guard. Mr. Mikeska was born March 10, 1918 in Abbott, the son of Frank and Albina (Hejl) Mikeska. He was a graduate of Abbott High School and also attended Hill Jr. College. On October 20, 1948, he was united in marriage to Frankye Mae Kucera in West. George served his country as a Medic for the US Army / Air Force during World War II. He was a farmer and rancher for his entire life, but also worked for A.O. Smith in Waco and Robin Tech in Hillsboro as an inspector for a number of years. He was a member of VFW Post No. 4819, American Legion, Knights of Columbus, KJT Society and SPJST Lodge No. 54, all in West. George served on the Abbott School Board, the Menlow Water Supply Board, was a Democratic Party Chairman, and also a member of Agriculture Conservation Service. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West, and was also a former longtime member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Abbott. George loved sports and was a very good athlete in his day. He always enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren playing sports. George loved to play taroky and dominoes, fishing and hunting, as well as watching Wheel of Fortune and The Price is Right. Mr. Mikeska is preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; his daughter, Rosalie Mikeska; three brothers, Ed Mikeska, Robert Mikeska and an infant brother; and six sisters, Ruby Kucera, Geraldine Brezina, Elfie Srubar, Elsie Kucera, Bessie Surovik and Marian Adamek. Survivors include his beloved wife of 64 years, Frankye Mikeska of Abbott; two daughters, Jane Kapavik and husband Henry of West, and Joyce Putnam and husband Mike of Ft. Worth; four grandchildren, Becky Machac and husband Marc, Sharon Hlavenka and husband Jon, Paula Williams and husband Jerimy, and John Kapavik and wife Jessica; nine great grandchildren, Lane, Lance, Devin, Raven, Hannah, Ashlyn, Ryan, Dylan and Brayden; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Active pallbearers are Frank Kucera, Ervin Kucera, Mitchell Kucera, Johnny Kucera, Albin Kucera, James Brezina, Albert Srubar Jr., Harry Volcik and Jerry Brezina. Honorary pallbearers are his great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Catholic Brothers and Sisters United.
