George Lee Downing

George Lee Downing, age 75, of West, passed away Monday evening, January 8, 2024 at Temple VA Community Living Center.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 10, 2024 at VFW Post 4819 in West.

George was born May 27, 1948 in Wichita Falls, the son of Arthur and Anna Marie (Splawn) Downing. He was a 1966 graduate of John Hirschi High School, and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration and Marketing from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls. On December 9, 1967 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth "Sissy" Scott in Wichita Falls. George proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam Era. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church Wichita Falls.  George worked for Hatley Distributing for 25 years before retiring in 2000. He enjoyed Hobie Cat sailing, playing golf, fishing, and hunting. George loved spending time with family, especially his children and grandchildren.

George is preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Leland Downing.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 56 years, Elizabeth "Sissy" Downing of West; his sons, Phillip Downing and wife Shannon of Highland Village, Jason Downing and wife Emilie of West; grandchildren, Cooper Downing, Brooklyn Downing, Madison Castilleja, Mallory Castilleja, and Megan Castilleja; a brother, Richard Lee Downing and wife Vicki; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ronald McDonald House in Fort Worth.
