George G. Harris

George G. Harris Sr., age 81, of Hillsboro, passed away late Thursday morning, October 5, 2017 at his residence. A rosary will be recited 6:00 p.m. Friday at Aderhold Funeral Home in West, with visitation to follow until 8:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 14, 2017 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Abbott, with Rev. Joe Keating and Rev. Michael Heidt officiating. Burial will follow at Bell Springs Cemetery near Abbott. George was born August 17, 1936 in Ft. Worth the son of John A. and Margueritte (Lindsey) Harris. He attended schools in Ft. Worth and was a 1954 graduate of Trimble Technical High School. He served his country with the United States Army. George was united in marriage to Carleen Nickell on January 15, 1955 in Weatherford. He was a civil engineer for the Corp of Engineers in Ft. Worth for over 32 years before retiring in 1987. George served as President and board member for the Texas Polled Hereford Association. He worked with Interfaith Ministries in Hillsboro for over 10 years and also served as President for 3 years. In serving the community, he and his wife provided food and clothing to all area churches for families in need. He also volunteered for Food for Families in Hillsboro. George was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Abbott. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #11230 in Abbott and the Ft. Worth Episcopal Diocesan Missionary Board. George enjoyed working with his cattle, camping and raising rabbits and chickens. He especially loved spending time with his family. George is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Hugh Harris. Survivors include his beloved wife of 62 years, Carleen Harris; his children, Tina Russell and husband Thomas and George G. "Griff" Harris Jr. and wife Deborah, all of Hillsboro; a sister, Jacqueline Jackson; grandchildren, Matthew King, Marcus Harris, Miranda Harris, Breana Harris and husband Cody and Jared Russell; a great granddaughter, Emery Harris; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Pallbearers are Bill Nickell, Grant Nickell, Matthew King, Marcus Harris, Jared Russell and Cody Harris. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hillsboro Interfaith Ministries or the American Cancer Society.
