Floyd Horton, age 90, of West, passed away early Sunday morning, January 1, 2023 at Homestead Nursing Home in Hillsboro.
A rosary will be recited and Mass of Christian Burial celebrated 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 9, 2023 at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West, with Rev. Ed Karasek as celebrant. Burial will follow at National Cemetery near West.
Floyd was born July 24, 1932 in Merkel, TX, the son of Robert and Amanda (Parker) Horton. He attended schools in Blevins, AR. On February 10, 1955, he was united in marriage to Almeda Maler in Waco. Almeda preceded him in death on June 18, 1989. On January 31, 1992 he was united in marriage to Doris Mechell in West. Floyd proudly served his country with the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West. Floyd was also a member of VFW Post #4819 and served as a board member for the Hilltop Water Supply. He worked for General Tire and Rubber company in Waco for several years. After leaving General Tire, Floyd and his son Chuck farmed and ranched together as well as worked construction. Floyd enjoyed gardening, traveling, working outside, tending to his cattle, and helping his neighbors and friends with whatever they may need. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Floyd is also preceded in death by his parents; his son, Chuck Horton; his sisters, Sarah Horton, Robbie Burns, Edna Hammit, Mattie Allred, Mary Jean Tarvin, Lula Faye Gilmore, and Barbara Woorley; his brothers, Thomas, R.J., C.W., John, Vernon, Lee Roy, James "J.D.", and Jimmie Ray Horton.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Horton of West; a daughter-in-law, Kathleen Horton of West; step-sons, Tim Bailey and fiancée Missy and Jimmy Grmela and wife Maria, all of West; a brother, Clinton Horton and wife Zoile; grandchildren, Michelle Ivy, Jessica Browning and husband Aaron, A.K. Horton, Keith Horton and wife Hillary, Chad Bailey, Kelsey Bailey, Alexandra Talley and husband Brandon, Sean Grmela, and Noah Grmela; great-grandchildren, Sadie Ivy, Hannah Ivy, Hallie Ivy, Brazos Browning, Brody Browning, Hayden Horton, and Virginia Jade Horton; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers are Sean Grmela, Noah Grmela, Keith Horton, Mark Frederick, James Watson, and Randy Horton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption.
