Evelyn Woodruff, age 98, of Katy, formerly of West, passed away Wednesday morning, December 2, 2015 at Spanish Meadows in Katy. Memorial services will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 8, 2015 at the Tallowood Baptist Church, 555 Tallowood Drive, Houston, TX. Graveside services will be held 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Closner Cemetery near West. Evelyn was born July 14, 1917 in Waco, the daughter of Charles C. and Charlotte "Minnie" (Heitmiller) Whitener. She attended schools in Ross, West and was a 1935 graduate of Waco. Evelyn then attended Baylor University receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1939 and a Masters Degree from the University of Houston. On October 14, 1939 she was united in marriage to Therbert Winfield Woodruff in Corsicana. Therbert preceded her in death on June 7, 1983. Evelyn had a long teaching career in many Texas public schools, rising to Principal of Grady Elementary and Pilgrim Elementary in Houston. She was a Charter member of Baylor University Womens Association of Houston, served as president of the Iota Kappa Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, and served as regent of the James Hardage Lane I Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She later transferred her membership to Tejas Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution to be with her family. After the death of her husband and in retirement, Evelyn spent many hours quilting and volunteering. She enjoyed working with children and adults in Vacation Bible School and Sunday School at Second Baptist Church. After joining Tallowood Baptist Church in 2007, she continued serving actively in Womens activities and Bible Studies on both Sunday and Tuesday. Her witnessing led others to the Lord. Every opportunity she had whether in a store, neighborhood or her residence at Spanish Meadows she spoke of salvation as she loved her Lord more than anything else on earth. While residing in Grayson Lakes she showed her patriotism by forming the first Fourth of July Celebration. Evelyn is also preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Charles Whitener, Jr.; her daughter, Mary Jane Schmidt; and her son-in-law, Bob Bobbitt. Survivors include sons, Therbert Woodruff, Jr. and wife Kathy and Sidney Woodruff and wife Julie; a daughter, Charlotte Bobbitt; numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews, great grandchildren and great nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Honorary pallbearers are Cleve Whitener, Jamie Rohe, Jim Depue, Sidney Whitener, Nathan Whitener, Greg Woodruff, Bill Waskom, Philip Moore, Jordan Woodruff and Larry Kristynik.
