After many adventures together, Mary O'Brien lost her best friend and the love of her life, as her husband, Eugene Francis O'Brien, started his next adventure on Sunday, January 19, 2025 at Baylor Scott & White All Saints Medical Center in Fort Worth.
A rosary will be recited 6:00 p.m. Friday, January 24, 2025 at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel, followed by visitation until 8:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 25, 2025 at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Tours, with Rev. Walter Dhanwar as celebrant, assisted by Deacon Jeff Cadenhead. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery near West.
Eugene was born September 22, 1957 in the Bronx, New York, the son of Eugene and Lillian (nee McGrath) O'Brien. On October 17, 1981 Eugene was united in marriage to Mary Atkins at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West. Mr. O'Brien attended St. Frances of Rome Elementary School where he was also an Altar Server and in the Parish Choir, Cardinal Spellman Catholic High School, and Manhattan College, all in the Bronx. He was a Boy Scout with Troup 118 in the Bronx where he received the Catholic Ad Altare Dei award. He worked in the printing industry for over 45 years at NuType Typographers, Inc., Cyber-Graphics, Inc., Lettra Graphics, Inc., Mergenthaler Linotype Company, Varityper Corporation, and Heidelberg USA, Inc. Eugene was an avid genealogist and was a member of the McLennan County Genealogical Society, Hill County Genealogical Society, and the Texas-Czech Genealogical Society. He was also a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Sons of the American Revolution, and a recipient of Alumni By Choice from Baylor University. He was a Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), a Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) in Networking, Data General UNIX (DG/UX) Certified, Stratus Certified Implementation Specialist and IBM xSeries Certified Specialist. Eugene also enjoyed cooking, listening to music, collecting memorabilia, and surprising his wife. He was Blessed to be able to travel this world making lifelong friends along the way. He paid it forward by doing things for many people anonymously.
Eugene is preceded in death by his parents; a brother-in-law, Gregory Salvia; his father-in-law, Cecil Atkins; and a granddaughter, Ellie Cadenhead.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 43 years, Mary O'Brien of West; daughters, Erin O'Brien and husband Mike O'Connor of Colorado Springs, CO, Lauren Vorderkunz and husband John of Waco, and Megan Cadenhead and husband Cameron of West; grandchildren, Chloe Dodd, Mary Jane Vorderkunz, Mildred Vorderkunz, Eugene Cadenhead, Colleen Cadenhead, and Lillian Cadenhead; his mother-in-law, Agnes Atkins; sisters, Jane Salvia, and Christine O'Brien and husband Steve Caron; brothers-in-law, Robert Atkins and wife Jacque, and Rickie Atkins and wife Denise; sister-in-law, Linda Floyd and husband Greg; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Active pallbearers are John Vorderkunz, Cameron Cadenhead, Mike O'Connor, Danny Nobles, Kris Tighe, Colton Atkins, Kyle Floyd, Gene Klein, James Salvia, and Brien Caron. Honorary pallbearers are his colleagues from Mergenthaler Linotype, Heidelberg and Macys West: Ron Brusa, Bruce Roth, Michael Szumelak, John Cosme, Jeff Noguera, Thomas Krumm, Claus Fingerhut, Andreas Vierke, Kay Herzog, Bernd Lueth, Joerg Krause, Claus Gumz, Dietmar Bischoff, and Martin Schneider.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to West Volunteer Ambulance Association, West Volunteer Fire Department, or West Boy Scout Troop #494.
