Elmer Melton, age 98, of West, passed away early Wednesday morning, July 4, 2007 at West Rest Haven. Graveside services will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the White Rock Cemetery near Ross, with Dr. John Crowder officiating. Mr. Melton was born December 15, 1908 on his grandfather farm near Brandon in Hill County, the son of Norman and Mattie (Brown) Melton. He attended schools in Hill County and graduate of Hillsboro High School. On April 18, 1936 he married the love of his life, LaVerne Kennedy, in Gainesville. She preceded him in death on November 4, 2002. They lived in Wichita Falls; Altus, OK; and Denison while Elmer work in the accounting departments for the M.K.T. Railroad. He retired in 1974 after over 30 years of service and moved to West in 1975 to be near his daughter, Sue Melton Pescaia and family. Mr. Melton was a devoted father and grandfather. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of West. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was a true gentleman, which he maintained to the end of his life. Elmer was a very talented musician; he played the piano and composed his own music. He loved nature and traveling, especially to the mountains. His parents; two brothers, J. E. Melton and Darrell C. Melton; and a sister, Lena Mae Jones, also preceded him in death. Survivors include his loving daughter, Sierra Sue and her husband Lynn Pescaia of West; his grandson, John Anthony Pescaia and his wife Heather of West; a brother, B.G. "Glenn" Melton and wife JoAnn of Waco; a brother-in-law, Jim "Buck" Kennedy of Nocona; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the First Baptist Church of West Building Fund.
