Elmer Bishop, age 86, of West, passed away late Friday afternoon, May 17, 2024 at Providence Hospital in Waco.
Per Elmer's request, a private memorial graveside service will be held at a later date.
Elmer was born October 8, 1937 in Ruth, Nevada, the son of Joseph and Virginia (Fisher) Bishop. He was a 1955 graduate of White Pine High School in Ely, NV. Elmer joined the United States Air Force in June of 1955. On October 4, 1958 he was united in marriage to Christine Kral in West. Christine preceded him in death on March 27, 2023. Elmer left the Air Force in 1963, then attended Hill Junior College and graduated in 1964 with an Associates of Arts Degree. Elmer re-entered the Air Force in 1965 where he proudly served his country during the Vietnam War until being honorably discharged at the rank of sergeant in 1969. Elmer was a member of the West Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4819 and an honorary member of the SPJST Lodge #54. He was a case worker for Texas Department of Human Services for 20 years before retiring. Elmer enjoyed walking, reading, gardening, bargain shopping, cooking, taking trips to the casino, and watching soccer. He loved spending time with his friends and family, especially his grandchildren.
Elmer is also preceded in death by his parents; his son, Alan Bishop; and a brother, Jimmy Bishop.
Survivors include his daughter, Michelle Martin and husband Jeff of West; his grandchildren, Justin, Ashley, and Brittany Martin; his brothers, Bobby Bishop and wife Way Nun, and Raymond Bishop and wife Kathy; a sister, Madeline Leibsack and husband Jim; a sister-in-law, Delores Bishop; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the West Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4819 Honor Guard or to the West Brethren Church Building Fund.
