Elizabeth Spence

Elizabeth "Granny" Spence, age 94, of West, passed away early Thursday morning, August 1, 2013 at Hill Regional Hospital in Hillsboro. Funeral services will be held 9:00 a.m. Monday at Aderhold Funeral Home in West, with Rev. Terry McElrath officiating. The family will receive visitors 8:30 a.m. Monday prior to the service at the funeral home. Graveside services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at Patrick Cemetery near China Spring. Elizabeth was born October 11, 1918 in Timpson, the daughter of Paul and Mary (Koonce) Cleveland. She attended school in Timpson. On May 18, 1932 she was united in marriage to Bud Spence in Waco. He preceded her in death on December 22, 1973. Elizabeth was a homemaker and also worked for Lorch Manufacturing and Jean Marie Manufacturing as a seamstress, and Liz's She Shoppe in Waco until her retirement in 1983. She was a faithful member of the Tokio Baptist Church where she helped with activities and for all church bake sales. She provided transportation for many senior citizens in the West area to get groceries and for doctor appointments. For over 25 years, Elizabeth volunteered at the Heart of Texas Fair Grounds at the Fine Arts Building. She loved family gatherings, crocheting, quilting, making jelly and picking up friends for the Home Demonstration Club meetings. Elizabeth is also preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Alton Cleveland; and an infant daughter, Mary Spence. Survivors include two daughters, Wilma Ruth Brown and husband Leon of Robinson and Janice Cunningham and special friend, Larry Sapp of West; two sons, Billy Joe Spence and David Spence and wife Linda, all of Ross; 11 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gholson Volunteer Fire Department, West Volunteer Fire Department, Ross Volunteer Fire Department or Elm Mott Volunteer Fire Department.
