Edward John Makovy, Sr., age 94, of Penelope, passed away early Sunday morning, April 18, 2010 at his residence. A rosary will be recited 6:30 p.m. Friday at Aderhold Funeral Home by Janice Kaluza followed by visitation until 8:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Church of the Nativity, BVM in Penelope, with Rev. B. George as celebrant. Military Graveside Rites will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery near Penelope, conducted by West V.F.W. Post No. 4819. Edward was born on September 13, 1915, the son of Frank and Julie Minar (Mynar) Makovy. He attended Brooken School and Veterans Agriculture School. Edward served his country during WWII in the European Theatre of Operations, where he was a warrant officer and corporal in the 37th Infantry Division. Edward received the following list of honors/medals during World War II: AAA Gun Crewman, Combat Infantryman Badge in June of 1945, American Defense Service Medal, American Theatre Campaign Medal, EAME Campaign Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal and a WWII Victory Medal. He had Coast Artillery Basic Training and he was an Antiaircraft Artillery Gun Crewman. Ed was 2nd in command of a group of 25-30 men operating a battery of (4) .50 calibre machine guns and instructed men in firing aerial targets. On July 10, 1944, he was united in marriage to Josephine (Bezdek) Makovy in Salina, Kansas. She preceded him in death on May 21, 2008. Edward worked for the Penelope Co-Op Gin and Store for many years and was also a farmer and rancher. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, doing carpenter work, dancing, playing the accordion, gardening, and working on his tractor. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and going to church. Edward was a member of the Church of the Nativity, BVM in Penelope, VFW Post #4819, and RVOS in Penelope. He is also preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, William "Bill" Makovy, John Makovy, Jerry Makovy, and Emmerick Makovy; and his sister, Sophie Young. Survivors include his son, Edward "Jimmy" Makovy and wife Patsy of Abbott; two daughters, Evelyn Ann Makovy of Penelope and Donna Jean (Makovy) Hawkins and husband Jack of Mt. Calm; two brothers, Frank Makovy and wife Vlasta of Lubbock and Joe Makovy and wife Mary Lou of Bellmead; three sisters, Lillian Losak and husband Frank of Bellmead, Mary Straten of Elm Mott, and Lois Veselka of Waco; two grandchildren, Shane Hawkins and Joshua Hawkins and wife Jessica; his dog Sparky; his caregiver, Tina Kris; and other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Active pallbearers are Sonny Tlustos, Shane Hawkins, Kelly Johnson, Freddy Lee Losak, Michael Bezdek, Ike Pratka, Jr., Michael Johnson, and Joshua Hawkins. Honorary pallbearers are Frank Makovy, Joe Makovy, Jerry Bezdek, Daniel Bezdek, John Dyer and Frank Losak. Memorials may be made to Church of the Nativity, BVM in Penelope or Penelope Volunteer Fire Department.
