Dennis L. Long, age 58, of Aquilla, passed away Monday, October 20, 2008 near Sterling City. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption with Rev. Ed Karasek as celebrant. Military Graveside Rites will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, conducted by West V.F.W. Post No. 4819. The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Aderhold Funeral Home. Dennis was born on December 27, 1949 in Waco, the son of Joe and Gladys (Keenum) Long. He attended McGregor and Waco schools and graduated from West High School in 1968. He served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. On July 20, 1974, he was united in marriage to Vicky Brennan. Dennis worked as a superintendant for several companies, including Cross Whitten Construction in Waco, Vanguard Construction in Temple, Barsh Construction in Waco, and for the past five years, he has been employed by Bobcat Contracting in Hillsboro. Dennis was a member of the Baylor and West Masonic Lodge, West Fair and Rodeo Assn. and West Longhorn Club, where he served as President and Rodeo Chairman, Central Texas Horseshow Assn. Director, Texas High School Rodeo Assn. Director, and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption. He enjoyed cooking, camping, hunting, fishing, farming, and especially spending time with his family. Survivors include his beloved wife Vicky Long of Aquilla; his parents, Joe and Gladys Long of Aquilla; one son, Cody Long of Big Lake; one daughter, Erin Walker and husband, Andrew of Newport News, VA; two sisters, Cathey Cook of Garland and Lanelle Farmer of Aquilla; one grandson, Brayden; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Active Pallbearers will be Steve Kalina, Greg Kalina, George Crawshaw, Larry Lassetter, Kenny Kunkel, Dwayne Uptmor, Alan Vanek, Ben Matus, Rocky Charanza, Ken Massey, Mike Cook, Marc Young,Eugene Knapek and Steve Vanek. Honorary Pallbearers will be his nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Texas High School Rodeo Association or the charity of your choice.
