Dan Atkins

Dan Atkins, age 53, of Penelope, passed away Saturday morning, April 14, 2012 at his residence. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel in West, with Pastor Darrell Beggs officiating. Military Graveside Rites will follow at Mesquite Cemetery near Birome. The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Daniel was born September 18, 1958 in Bryan, the son of Joel and Veda (Bishop) Atkins. He attended Penelope schools and graduated from Penelope High School in 1977. Dan served his country in the United States Navy for four years, stationed in Norfolk Virginia and Pennsylvania. Upon his return he graduated from Hill College in 1984 with an Associate Degree in Business. On July 22, 1978, he was united in marriage to Patricia Marek in Penelope. Dan was the operations manager for the Outlets of Hillsboro for over 20 years. Dan enjoyed fishing, hunting, bar-b-queing, coaching little league, and especially enjoyed spending time with his family. Survivors include his beloved wife of 33 years, Pat Atkins of Penelope; his parents, Joel and Veda Atkins of Penelope; two sons, Justin Atkins and wife Amanda of Milford and Cody Atkins and wife Tracy of Dawson; his mother-in-law, Charlotte Marek; a brother, Sam; three sisters, Benita, Susan, and Brenda; a sister-in-law, Paula; seven grandchildren, Chase, Clay, Celsie, Caleb, Justice, Landyn, and Brayden; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Pallbearers are Kenny Wallis, Louis Thurston, Bradley McHargue, James Piel, Steven Jennings, Travis Thurston, and Justin Reed. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family to help with final expenses.
