Correne M. Mccollum

Correne M. McCollum, age 86, of West, passed away Wednesday morning, August 23, 2017 at Scott & White Hospital in Temple. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 28, 2017 at the First Baptist Church in West, with Dr. John Crowder officiating. Burial will follow at Bold Springs Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Correne was born June 17, 1931 in Milam County, the daughter of the late C.H. and Bertha (Swanzy) Massey. She attended schools in Cameron and was a 1949 graduate of Cameron High School, where she was the band sweetheart for two years. On December 20, 1952 she was united in marriage to Abbott "A.J." McCollum in Rosebud. A.J. preceded her in death on May 28, 2013. Correne was a homemaker, Mother and a Licensed Vocational Nurse. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of West. Correne was also a 65 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star Rosebud Chapter #23. She volunteered with the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention in many countries. Correne enjoyed cooking, sewing, reading and nursing cattle on the family ranch. She especially loved spending time with and preparing meals for her family. Survivors include her children, Rev. Jay McCollum Jr. and wife Anne of Gallup, NM and Jan McCollum of West; grandsons, CPT Benjamin "B.J." McCollum MD and CPT Caleb McCollum and wife Cari; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Active pallbearers are CPT B.J. McCollum MD, Dr. Jeff Price, Dr. Jeter Basden, Jerry Girard, Rickey Allred, Cindy Elsik Palmer and Mike McCollum. Honorary pallbearers are CPT Caleb & Cari McCollum, Fred & Virgie McCollum, Dr. Charles & Betty Johnson, Billie McCollum, Raye McCollum and Correne's Nieces and Nephews.
