Carolyn Gerik

Carolyn Gerik, age 89, of West, passed away early Sunday morning, September 26, 2010 at West Rest Haven. A rosary will be recited and Mass of Christian Burial celebrated 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West, with Rev. Ed Karasek as celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Mrs. Gerik was born July 13, 1921 in West, the daughter of Louis and Christine (Cepak) Hutyra. She attended school in Abbott. On October 10, 1939 she was united in marriage to Adolph H. Gerik in West. He preceded her in death on November 22, 1999. Carolyn worked as a nurse's aide for West Community Hospital for several years before retiring in 2001. She previously worked for Lorch Manufacturing and Wolf Manufacturing. Carolyn was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West. She enjoyed baking, reading, shopping and cooking. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren. Her parents; a son, Ronnie Gerik; a daughter, Barbara Ann Cannon; three brothers, Ernest Hutyra, George Hutyra, and Joe Hutyra; and a sister, Irene McGee; also preceded her in death. Survivors include two sons, Tommy Gerik and wife Sara of West, and David Gerik of Waco; a sister, Helen Schutza of West; a sister-in-law, Doris Hutyra of Waco; 12 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Pallbearers are Brian Gerik, Darrell Gerik, Rick Gerik, Ernie Gerik, Keith Gerik and Mike McGee. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to West Volunteer Ambulance Association, or St. Mary's School Endowment Fund.
