Benton E. "Bud" Thurman, age 73, of Dawson, passed away Friday afternoon, January 15, 2016 at his residence. Graveside services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday January 19, 2016 at Bold Springs Cemetery near West, with Rev. Bob Rainey officiating. Bud was born on December 2, 1942 in Pontiac, Michigan, the son of Evelyn (Owens) and Benton E. Thurman, Sr. He graduated from Abilene High School in 1960, Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science in 1963, Tarleton State University in 1968 and the Waco Police Academy in 1971. On March 23, 1963 he was united in marriage to Stevie Walter in Abilene. Bud was funeral director for Sawyer George Funeral Home in Corpus Christi for over 15 years. He retired as a detective for the Waco Police Department in 1988. He was a member of the St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Hubbard where he served as a Lay Reader. Bud enjoyed traveling and camping. He especially loved spending time with his family. Bud is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Bruce Thurman; and a sister, Nancy Baumle. Survivors include his beloved wife of 53 years, Stevie Thurman of Dawson; two daughters, Kristen Thurman of Dawson and Brandy Landrum and husband Don of West; grandchildren, Abby Johnson and husband Chase, Adam Ramos, Anna Ramos, Presley Landrum and Payton Landrum; great grandchildren, Aidyn Ramos and Owen Johnson; nieces, Mary Jane Falwell and husband Jim and Pam Jones and husband Chuck; a nephew, Vic Baumle and wife Shirley; and many other relatives and friends. The family would like to thank Cedar Lake Hospice for their love and support during the time of his illness. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Quilters For Christ or the First United Methodist Church of Hubbard.
