Barnes Lewis

Barnes Lewis, age 94, of West, passed away late Thursday morning, July 7, 2011 in Granbury. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday at Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel in West, with Rev. Terry McElrath officiating. Graveside services will be held 11:30 a.m. Monday at Waco Memorial Park. The family will receive visitors from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Mr. Lewis was born August 27, 1916 in Hill County near Hubbard, the son of Henry T. and Una (Washer) Lewis. He attended school in Munger. On September 26, 1936 he was united in marriage to Myrtle Ryno in Coolidge. She preceded him in death on July 29, 2001. Barnes worked as an aircraft mechanic at James Connally Air Force Base for 23 years before retiring in 1965. He also worked for Mosley Machinery and General Dynamics in Waco, was a heavy machinery operator for H.B. Zachry, and drove a school bus for the West Independent School District. He was a longtime and faithful member of the Tokio Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and was formerly a member of Lakeview Baptist Church. Barnes enjoyed fishing and camping. He was a former Boy Scout Leader and served on the Connally Independent School Board. Barnes is also preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Barnes D. Lewis and Jimmy D. Lewis; a daughter, Linda Montgomery; five brothers, Travis Lewis, Roy Lewis, Dalbert Lewis, H. T. Lewis, Jr. and Paul Lewis; and a sister, Inez Wilkerson. Survivors include four sons, Joe D. Lewis and wife Carol and Michael Lewis and wife Margaret, all of Granbury; James L. Lewis and wife Patricia of Smithfield, NC, and John D. Lewis of Grand Lake, OK; a daughter, Myrna Nix and husband Franc Amaya of Elgin; a sister, Mary Evelyn Nelson; 12 grandchildren; and many great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Active pallbearers are Ron Nelson, Randall Lewis, Carroll Wilkerson, Jim Ryno, Rick Schafer, David Fleming, and Larry Lands. Honorary pallbearers are former members of Barne's Boy Scout Troop. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation or the charity of your choice.
