Alfred C. Vavra, age 88, of Ross, passed away early Friday morning, September 2, 2011 at West Rest Haven in West. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday at the Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel, with Minister Sam Armstrong officiating. Burial will follow at White Rock Cemetery near Ross. The family will receive visitors from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Mr. Vavra was born November 1, 1922 in Dallas, the son of Peter William and Leach (Degges) Vavra. He attended school in Ross and graduated from West High School in 1942. Al was a longtime faithful member of the Elm Mott Church of Christ. Alfred was an office manager for Huaco Gardens in Waco for several years. He then became a project manager for the Waco Dam with Clement Brothers Construction in 1964 and the Pat Mays Dam in Paris, TX in 1965. He was owner of the Summer Street Laundry in Waco for over 15 years before retiring in 1982. Alfred enjoyed working crossword puzzles, listening to music, coin collecting, and was known as a history buff. Al is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, James Arnold Vavra, Herbert Vavra and Robert Vavra; and a sister, Arlene Vavra. Survivors include two brothers, Richard Vavra of Ross, and Harold Vavra and wife Dorothy of Temple; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Pallbearers are Warren Vavra, Bo Peters, Gary Schutza, Herb Svec, Rick Maddox. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Elm Mott Church of Christ or the charity of your choice.
