Albin J. Matus, Sr., age 87, of Bellmead, passed away late Saturday night, December 20, 2008 at his residence. A rosary will be recited 6:00 p.m. Monday at Aderhold Funeral Home, with visitation to follow until 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Bellmead, with Rev. Timothy Vavarek as celebrant. Burial will follow at Fatima Cemetery near Abbott. Albin was born on December 17, 1921 in Hill County, the son of John R. and Rosie (Trlica) Matus. He attended Alligator Creek and Abbott schools. He served his country with the United States Army Air Corp during World War II in the South Pacific. On June 18, 1946 he was united in marriage to Adele Kolar in West. Albin worked as a warehouse supervisor for Olmstead-Kirk Paper Co. in Waco for over 37 years before retiring in 1986. He enjoyed playing dominoes, crappie fishing, and bar-b-cueing. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Albin served as a board member for Reicher Catholic High School and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #7202 in Bellmead, the McLennan-Hill Czech Heritage Society, a life member of the V.F.W. Post #4819 in West, and was a charter member and served on the board of directors for Geneva Hall. Albin was an accomplished accordion player, playing for many weddings, anniversaries, Westfest, and West Rest Haven, where he enjoyed volunteering. He was also a founding member of a polka and country western band called Albin Matus and the Rhythm Playboys. His parents; two sisters, Rosalie Parma and Barbara Ann Matus; one brother, Rudolph Matus; and a son-in-law, Laddie Nors all preceded him in death. Survivors include his beloved wife of over 62 years, Adele Matus of Bellmead; three sons, Albin J. Matus, Jr. and wife Marcia of Sunnyvale, Milton J. Matus and wife Mary Jean, and Benny Matus and wife Kim, all of Austin; four daughters, Mary Ann Nors of Marble Falls, Marsha Gerik and husband Ronnie of Aquilla, Melissa Reither and husband Charlie of Hutto, and Monica Williamson and husband Ken of Arlington; one brother, Johnny Matus of Irving; two sisters, Willie Mae Pustejovsky and husband Henry of Abbott and JoAnn Cepak and husband Joseph of Bellmead; nineteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; special friends, Frank and Lilly Losak; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Active pallbearers are Matthew Matus, Jacob Gerik, Levi Matus, Scott Lewis, Andrew Williamson, Austin Sparks, Travis Sparks, and Joey Meyer. Honorary pallbearers are John Paul Matus, David Nors, Ronnie Joe Gerik, and Zachary Gerik. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
