Adolph Havel

Adolph "A. R." Havel, age 85, of West, passed away late Saturday night, April 22, 2006 at West Rest Haven. A rosary will be recited 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:15 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption, with Rev. Ed Karasek as celebrant. Military Graveside Rites will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery conducted by West V.F.W. Post No. 4819. The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Mr. Havel was born June 12, 1920 the son of Martin and Catherine (Vlasak) Havel in Gonzales County near Shiner. He attended schools in Shiner and graduated from a private high school in Shiner. He served his country with the United States Army Air Corp during World War II from 1940 to 1945. On November 25, 1942 he married Dorothy Marie Deiterman in West. They moved to West in 1945 to raise their family. Mr. Havel was the manager and secretary for the City of West for over 30 years until retiring in 1982. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption where he was active in the church choir. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 2305, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4819, and S.P.J.S.T. Lodge No. 36. Mr. Havel was very proud of the 30 years he spent as a member of the West Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as secretary for over 20 years before retiring in 1982. He enjoyed yard work and playing dominoes and especially loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. His parents and several brothers and sisters also preceded him in death. Survivors include two sons, James M Havel and with Linda of Kerrville and Edward Havel and wife Linda of West; one daughter, Carol Ann Hernandez and husband Reuban of Round Rock; one sister, Katherine Strauss of Colorado; five grandchildren, Patrick Havel, Guy Havel, Kacy Havel, April Havel, and Jessica Hernandez; four great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Parish Center or the West Volunteer Fire Department.
