Hazel Lee "Jean" Oden, age 87, of West, formerly of Dallas, passed away Monday afternoon February 27, 2006 at West Rest Haven. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the Aderhold Funeral Home Chapel in West, with Rev. Ron Fowler officiating. Burial will follow at Bold Springs Cemetery near West. The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Mrs. Oden was born on September 7, 1918 in Huntington, the daughter of David and Nannie (Horton) Johnson. She attended schools in the East Texas area. On May 25, 1945, she was united in marriage to Elzy Oden in Houston. He preceded her in death on December 14, 1986. She worked as a waitress and cashier for the Statler Hotel and in the Restaurant area at Apperell Mart in Dallas. Jean loved gardening, quilting and was well known for the best butterscotch pie and banana pudding. She will truly be missed because she was such a loving mother, grandmother and friend. Survivors include one son, Luther "Sunny" Runnels and his wife Carol of Flint; two daughters, Paulette A. Oden and Philip Martin of Alvarado and April Hanes and husband Joe of Tyler; eight grandchildren, Nechelle Decker of Allen, Adrien DuVall and wife Terrie Lynn of Ennis, Bryan Runnels and wife Trisha of Denver CO, Cheryl Fowler and husband Ron of Crandall, Dana Leigh of Ohio, Jan Fowler and husband Darin of Seagoville, Clay Runnels and wife Jessica of Florida and Suni Luckey and husband Gary of College Station; twenty-five great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; and several other relatives. Active pallbearers will be Ernest Oden, Randy Oden, Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
